General Comments
Mel is a licensed Marriage and Family therapist, a divorce and dissolution coach and a divorce educator. For the past 30 years, he has been working with adults, children and families experiencing issues of divorce and separation. He taught at the University of San Diego in the Graduate Program of Marriage and Family Studies for thirteen years, and was director of clinical supervision at San Diego Youth and Community Services’ Coastal Communities counseling clinic for twenty five years. For the last fifteen years, Mel has been speaking publically about healthy ways couples can divorce. His interest in this developed through his work with adults and children who were experiencing emotional trauma while they, or their parents, were going through a process of divorce. In 1997, he began working with Kids’ Turn, an educational program that teaches coping skills to parents and children going through divorce. And in 2000, he became a charter member of the Collaborative Family Law Group of San Diego whose purpose is to educate the community about new and healthier ways for families to divorce without the need of the court system. He works as a coach and child specialist in this process.
In addition to his clinical license, Mel holds life credentials in Counseling and Psychology from the California Community Colleges. He has been a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists since 1987, the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists since 1978, and the International Association of Collaborative Professionals since 2000.
